, everyone. >>> today, toyota is agreeing to pay a record fine stemming from its gas pedal problems. tom costello is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: today is the deadline for toyota to accept or fight a $16.4 million fine. the company is expected to pay up, the largest fine ever assessed by the government against a car maker. the government alleges toyota knew about sticking gas pedals last september, but hid the effects and issued a recall. toyota is facing mounting civil lawsuits as well as criminal investigations. a $16 million fine for toyota is really not significant, but it is yet another strike against the company's reputation. toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles in january for the sticking accelerator. the company has recalled more than 8 million vehicles worldwide because of acceleration problems and braking problems. a government official tells nbc news by paying the full civil penalty, toyota is accepting responsibility for hiding this safety defect from nhtsa, the national highway safety administration, in violation of the law. it now has 30 days to write

iyad allawi. toyota will pay the u.s. government a record fine of $16.4 million for safety violations. the transportation department accused the automaker of failing to report accelerator problems in a timely manner. toyota denied any wrongdoing, but said it wanted to avoid a "protracted dispute." also today, the company recalled the 2010 lexus gx 460 after "consumer reports" warned it's prone to rolling over. for the record, toyota is an underwriter of the newshour. on wall street today, blue-chip stocks made up some of the ground they lost on friday. the dow jones industrial average gained 73 points to close at 11,092. but the nasdaq fell 1 point to close at 2480. the russian government served notice today that a freeze on u.s. adoptions will stay in force until a new agreement is in place. talks were to begin today, but the ash cloud over europe prevented the u.s. delegation from getting to moscow. the russians imposed a freeze last week after a tennessee woman sent her adopted son back to russia by himself. those are some of the day's main stories. i'll be back at the end of the p
: well, in other news tonight, the automaker toyota has just announced another recall. this one effects about 600,000 cinema minivans. model year 1998 through 2010. people could see corrosion from the road salt in the spare tire cable. worse case scenario they say the spare tire could fall off the minivan and cause a big problem for whatever vehicle is behind it the automaker is still working on a fix here. folks with cars in this recall should go to their dealers for an inspection. this, of course, is just the latest in toyota's recall troubles which effect more than 8 million cars and trucks around the world. tonight, we are getting a new look at the inside workings at the controversial move by the central intelligence agency. new documents now indicate that after the cia disobeyed a white house order by destroying videotapes of interrogations, the agency's director said he was okay with the decision. here's the back story. it starts in 2002, when cia agents were holding these two suspected terrorists in thailand. we have since learned that the agency used waterboarding on those suspe
